Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is a viral respiratory illness that is new to humans.

It was first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012

and has since spread to several other countries, including the United States.

Most people infected with MERS-Corona Virus developed severe acute respiratory illness, including fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

Many of them have died. (°¨¿°µÈ ȯÀÚ 10¸íÁß 3-4¸íÀÌ »ç¸Á)

Through retrospective investigations, health officials later identified that the first known cases of MERS occurred in Jordan in April 2012. So far, all cases of MERS have been linked to countries in and near the Arabian Peninsula. (¾Æ¶óºñ¾È ¹Ýµµ ±Ùó ¸ðµç ³ª¶ó¿¡¼ ¹ß»ýÇÑ´Ù. ±×·±µ¥ Áúº´°ü¸®º»ºÎ¿¡¼´Â....)

Most MERS-CoV cases have been reported in adults (median age approximately 50 years,

male predominance),

although children and adults of all ages have been infected (range 0 to 99 years).

Most hospitalized MERS-CoV patients have had chronic co-morbidities (´ç´¢, ¾Ï, ÀÚ°¡¸é¿ª¼º Áúȯ µî ¸¸¼ºÁúȯÀ» °¡Áö°í ÀÖ´Â °æ¿ì ÀÔ¿øÀ» ¿äÇÏ´Â °æ¿ì°¡ ´ëºÎºÐÀÔ´Ï´Ù).

Among confirmed MERS-CoV cases reported to date, the case fatality proportion is approximately 35%.

The median incubation period for secondary cases (ȯÀÚ¿Í Á¢ÃËÇÏ¿© ¹ßº´ÇÑ 2Â÷ °¨¿°ÀÚ) associated with limited human-to-human transmission is approximately 5 days (range 2-14 days). In MERS-CoV patients, the median time from illness onset to hospitalization is approximately 4 days. In critically ill patients, the median time from onset to intensive care unit (ICU) admission is approximately 5 days

Laboratory findings at admission may include leukopenia, lymphopenia, thrombocytopenia, and elevated lactate dehydrogenase levels.

Co-infection with other respiratory viruses and a few cases of co-infection with community-acquired bacteria at admission has been reported; nosocomial bacterial and fungal infections have been reported in mechanically-ventilated patients.(°á±¹ ¼¼±Õ°¨¿°ÀÌ µ¿¹ÝµÇ¸é¼ expire ÇÒ °ÍÀ¸·Î »ý°¢µË´Ï´Ù.)

MERS-CoV virus can be detected with higher viral load and longer duration in the lower respiratory tract compared to the upper respiratory tract,

and has been detected in feces, serum, and urine (ȯÀÚÀÇ ±â°üÁö °¡·¡ »Ó¸¸ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó Ç÷û, ´ëº¯, ¼Òº¯¿¡¼µµ °ËÃâÀÌ µÈ´Ù´Â ±º¿ä)

No specific treatment for MERS-CoV infection is currently available.

Clinical management includes supportive management of complications and implementation of recommended infection prevention and control measures.
